The word Alchemy is derrived from Al-Kymia, Arabic for Chemistry, which in turn is derived from Kyme (Egypt), the black land. Alchemy is an esoteric art and science that had unmistakably originated in Egypt as it is etymologically evident from Kyme.

Founded in 1997 by Karim Mekhtigian, Alchemy Design Studio started out as an interior and product design office. A few years later

Kartell on the Nile

Transient
Transient

Better late than never … Kartell’s 12th branch in the Middle East opened its doors last July on the banks of the Nile in the Maadi district of Cairo. The importance of this event was  underscored by the presence of the company’s President Caludio Luti.Kartell                                              is the brand that built its international reputation as the company that revolutionized design through redesigning many everyday objects in plastic materials through innovative production technologies and efficient processes. Started in 1949 by the young chemical  engineer Giuilo Castelli, Kartell evolved into a global name producing the works of major designers like Philippe Starck, Ron Arad, Antonio Citterio, Piero Lissoni, Patricia Urquiola, Vico Magistretti, Enzo Mari, and many more. Under the leadership of Claudio Luti, who took over the company 20 years ago. Kartell continued its path of innovation until in 1999 Kartell became the first company in the world to use polycarbonate to produce furnishing objects. Luti, whose original background was in fashion does not see a great difference between the two fields, ”the strategy (in both) remains the same, it is just a different selection, quality of design, and different designers.” he explained. Kartell places a great deal of importance on design. The designers who work with Kartell have to “be able to work with us a long time. They are designers who have something special, trendy, because it is not enough to have only technology and innovation, you have to combine it with a sense of feeling.”                              This special quality and character that has come to represent Kartell is what is exhibited in over 250 stores in ninety countries, and it is what makes Luti confident that Kartell will succeed in Egypt where plastic furniture might not be as popular. “We are the same brand everywhere … the material itself is not the value, we are selling quality and originality. We are quality of design. You can recognize that we are the work of the best designers in the world.” Kartell has become a brand, and hence the name has outgrown the field of furniture, as Luti explains where the “Glue Cinderella” plastic ballerina flat shoes came from.”It was my daughter who pushed me to open Kartell to something other than furniture.”
